OUR MISSION

Efren Guitron’s journey from the small rural town of Cuautla, Jalisco, to establishing a Mexican restaurant legacy in the Pacific Northwest exemplifies hard work, tradition, and the power of family. Born and raised in a town so small it barely appears on maps, Efren left his home in 1970 and traveled to Seattle, Washington, where a relative ran a thriving Mexican restaurant. There, Efren mastered the art of traditional hometown recipes, which became the foundation of his culinary success.

In the fall of 1980, Efren opened the first El Tapatio in Milwaukie, Oregon, determined to bring the vibrant flavors of Mexico to the Portland area. He worked tirelessly to make his dream a reality, running the 10-table restaurant single-handedly for its first five years. Efren opened the doors, prepared the kitchen, and personally served each dish, winning customers over with his authentic recipes and heartfelt hospitality. Word of the restaurant spread quickly, drawing long lines of eager diners.

In the spring of 1995, Hector and Estela Alcazar embraced their own journey of sharing authentic Mexican cuisine with their communities. Deeply connected to their Jalisco heritage and the vibrant culinary traditions of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, they built upon their family legacy with a unique vision. They invested in and managed three restaurant locations in Oregon: St. Helens, Rainier, and Cottage Grove. Their passion for authentic flavors and family-inspired hospitality eventually led them to expand into California, opening a location in Citrus Heights in May 2013 and another in Auburn in October 2022.

Hector and Estela have worked tirelessly to bring the rich traditions of Mexican cuisine to their patrons. Alongside their five children—three daughters and two sons—they have created spaces where guests can experience the warmth of family and the bold flavors of Michoacán-inspired dishes. More than just places to eat, their restaurants celebrate heritage, family, and community.

El Tapatio’s success stems from its commitment to quality and authenticity. From traditional favorites like tacos and enchiladas to specialty dishes such as the signature Molcajete, Hector and Estela ensure every plate reflects their rich cultural roots. Vibrant Mexican art adorns the walls of each location, creating a welcoming environment where guests can gather, celebrate, or enjoy a casual meal.

At El Tapatio, generous portions, affordable prices, and exceptional service come together to create an unforgettable dining experience. Hector and Estela, along with their family, warmly invite you to savor the authentic flavors of Mexico in a welcoming and festive atmosphere. ¡Bienvenidos a El Tapatio!
